Hyo
2011
C-print 40"x40"

Hyo refers to a confucian virtue of filial piety, which teaches and propagates respect to one's parents, elders and ancestors. Practiced, normalized and universalized amongst East Asian ethics and social conduct, the cultural expectations on children to be the dependent, and subordinated is projected on parent child power dynamics. In Western culture, such virtues of filial piety is not as much imposed. By performing gesture of carrying my parents on the back, the work tries to question the cultural expectations carried over into the western context, as a consequence of immigration. Cultural expectations practiced out of its social context, the boundaries and principles shifts and become malleable.
